Video: EV Charging in Condos: Connections and Accommodations

2019.04.10

One Bedford Condo in Toronto is ready for EVs, now let’s take a look at some of the must-haves to getting there. Just outside of the main electrical room, where the EV Panel is set up, we discussed some common issues around connections and accommodations.

Connections

Making the right connections requires expertise. Perhaps most important in an EV Panel installation is the location. When 600 volts are running through a transformer to a panel, it is enough to recharge 18 vehicles with power-sharing but with 400 feet of wiring, voltage drop is a significant challenge to consider. It is best to be in a protected central location.

“We have to be sensitive to the needs of the residents and that what we are doing is going to work both for the Electrical Safety Authority and central, so there’s a lot of things to think about.”
Mark Marmer – President, Signature Electric

Accommodations

Planning an EV charging system is forward-thinking. As more electric vehicles are sold, having access to EV chargers will surely raise property values. Rather than seeing EV accommodation as an expense problem, you should see it as a valuable amenity. It can also bring a building together as a community.

At One Bedford Condo, all of the cars and all of the spots in the garage can be accomodated. Very impressive.

Up next we will look at an Installed Networked EV Panel and learn how it communicates wirelessly…
