How Carbon Credits Can Pay EV Drivers

2026.11.03
You could get a home EV charger without paying for the hardware, then earn rewards as you charge. Carbon credits in Canada can help make both possible through eligible charging programs.

Signature Electric founder Mark Marmer recently joined Tech Talk to discuss the program in more detail and how EV drivers can benefit from it. Listen to the full episode HERE.

How carbon credits in Canada work

Carbon credits give people and businesses a way to earn money by cutting greenhouse gas pollution. Qualifying projects can earn credits by preventing emissions or removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

Those credits can then be sold. Companies then buy eligible credits to help meet emissions rules or voluntary climate goals.

Selling credits can help cover the costs of projects that reduce emissions, making them more affordable.

How you could get a free EV charger

EV charging can generate credits under Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations. Some home charging programs offer a compatible charger at no hardware cost, subject to their terms. The connected charger records eligible charging, helping the provider create credits that fund the offer.

A free charger offer may cover only the equipment. Installation, wiring and any electrical upgrades can still cost extra. Ask what’s included, whether a deposit or fees apply, and what you’ll pay to get everything installed.

Earn rewards from everyday charging.

Once you’re enrolled, participating programs calculate rewards from the eligible electricity delivered to your EV, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). You pay your electricity bill as usual and receive the rewards separately.

Make overnight charging work for you.

Another way to make charging work for you is to charge when rates are the lowest.

Plug in when you get home, then set your charger app to start later when energy prices are low. If you’re on Ontario’s Ultra-Low Overnight plan, the cheapest hours are between 11 p.m. and 7 am. Your car can top up while you get some sleep.
