If you run a business along a major transportation route in Canada, there’s a funding opportunity you’ll want to know about. The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) is offering substantial grants to help organizations install public fast-charging stations in high-priority travel corridors.
Applications opened on November 25, 2025, and the program will continue to accept them until funding runs out. Translation: if you’re interested, don’t wait.
Step One: Check Your Location
Before diving into the details, you’ll want to confirm your site meets the geographic requirements:
To qualify, your site must be within 1.6 kilometres of a designated corridor road on the EV Charging Planning Map.

Data source: Natural Resources Canada. This is a preliminary check only.
Use the search tool to quickly check if your site is located in a qualifying area. If this particular funding stream isn’t available for your location, don’t worry; other EV infrastructure programs may be a better fit. Contact us, and we can help you explore alternatives.
Step Two: Is This Funding Right for Your Business?
This funding works best for businesses where customers naturally spend 15 to 45 minutes (or longer). These are locations that can leverage charging time to generate additional revenue.
Prime project locations:
- Hotels and resorts – Guests charge overnight while enjoying amenities
- Restaurants, cafés, and quick-service spots – Charging while customers eat
- Gas stations and travel centres – Already built to serve corridor traffic
- Grocery stores and big-box retailers – Charging while customers shop
- Convenience stores – Quick stops plus impulse purchases
- Event centres, arenas, and community hubs – Charging during games and events
- Tourist attractions – Visitors charge while they explore
- Parking operators – High accessibility with straightforward operations
- Car dealerships with public-facing areas – If accessible 24/7
- Municipal facilities like recreation centres – If 24/7 public access is feasible
The common thread? These are all destinations where EV drivers have a natural reason to stop and spend time, making the charging experience seamless rather than inconvenient.
Who Can Apply?
This program is designed for organizations, not individuals. To qualify, you must be a legal entity that will own and operate the charging infrastructure directly. Eligible applicants include:
- Private companies and electric utilities
- Industry associations
- Indigenous businesses (registered in the Indigenous Business Directory) and community groups
- Provincial, territorial, and municipal governments (including applicable agencies)
Technical Requirements
ZEVIP has specific technical requirements to ensure funded stations meet the needs of EV drivers on long-distance trips. Your project must include:
- At least one public DC fast charger rated at 100 kW minimum
- Additional chargers to reach at least 150 kW total site output
- 24/7 public access—no exceptions
- New installation or expansion (not replacement of existing chargers)
That last point is crucial: if you’re looking to swap out aging chargers, this isn’t the right program. ZEVIP is focused on expanding the network, not maintaining it.
How Much Funding Is Available?
Here’s where it gets interesting. The funding levels are generous, especially for Indigenous-led projects:
- Up to 50% of eligible project costs for most applicants
- Up to 75% for Indigenous businesses and communities
- Maximum of $2,000,000 per project
- Each applicant can submit up to 2 proposals
For a well-planned project at a strategic location, this funding can significantly enhance your return on investment and enable you to offer a valuable service to EV drivers passing through your area.
Step Three: Apply
Applications are submitted through the Transportation and Fuels Decarbonization Programs portal. You’ll need:
- Completed online application form
- Supporting documentation for your project
- Signed attestation from an authorized officer in your organization
The application process can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re new to government funding programs. That’s where we come in.
