Letter to Environment Minister: keep strong standards

2019.01.22

A letter addressed to Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, urges the honourable minister to uphold Canada’s GHG emissions standards on vehicles through 2025.

More EVs and fewer gas-guzzlers, please!

The letter suggests that if the US continues to weaken emissions standards that Canada should not follow suit. Instead, we should align with the 14 states in the US that have the strongest emissions regulations, led by California. This would result in strong standards covering 40% of the US-Canadian market.

“There are no technological or cost-prohibitive reasons why the emissions standards cannot be met with existing vehicle technology, particularly in light of the accelerated pace of fleet electrification in Canada (214% year-over-year growth)”

Clean Economy Alliance – Letter to Minister McKenna

Stronger standards will mean consumer savings on gasoline cost, increased job growth (especially in the auto sector), and meeting emissions targets.

Every breath you take…

“Health Canada’s latest air quality report illustrates that 14,000 to 15,000 people in Canada die prematurely every year because of air pollution”

Clean Economy Alliance – Letter to Minister McKenna

Improving our air quality is a noble goal. Canada also has new Zero-Emission Vehicle Strategy and Clean Fuel Standard policies on the way. However, we can do more.

According to a recent UN report, Canada is no longer on pace to meet the Paris Climate Agreement 2020 targets of reducing emissions to 17% below the 2005 levels. This is clearly not the time to slow down on maintaining strong vehicle emissions standards.

We need to urge the Minister of Environment and Climate Change to keep stringent regulations today for the sake of tomorrow.

Promoting cleaner air for everyone

Signature Electric was one of the 40 prominent organizations to sign the letter, along with Plug’N Drive, SWTCH, ChargePoint, Clean Air Alliance, and Renewables Industries Canada, to name just a few. It is an honour to be amongst such great organizations championing the environment.

Let’s hope the minister gets the message and puts Canada back on track to doing our part on climate change. Read the full letter here: More Than 40 organizations Ask Canada To Maintain Strong Vehicle Emissions Standards.

Thanks again to the Clean Economy Alliance, all of the organizations that signed, and everyone that supports the goal of less pollution. It is time to do the right thing.
