Imagine pulling into an ordinary parking lot and finding a cutting-edge EV charging hub instead—that’s what we achieved at Rainbow Lakes in Kitchener. This project challenged us to rethink traditional setups and push the boundaries of what’s possible.
Project Overview
Typically, our installations are done in underground parking lots. However, the developers of the Rainbow Lakes project had the foresight to prepare the site with bases and circuits that could support up to four chargers each. This meant we needed to design and implement custom charging solutions suitable for an outdoor lot.
Custom Charging Infrastructure
Durability and functionality were our top priorities. Given the exposure to elements and cold winters, every piece of our charging infrastructure, from the pedestals to the retractors, was hot-dip galvanized. This process coats steel in molten zinc, protecting it from rust and wear. It ensures the infrastructure lasts longer and requires less maintenance.
Planning Ahead
Effective planning is the backbone of successful projects. We pre-drilled all necessary holes and installed anchors in our workshop, streamlining the on-site setup. Components were systematically organized on skids for easy transport. Once on site, a crane precisely placed each pedestal onto its pre-leveled base, showcasing the efficiency of our preparation.
Seamless Installation
Our meticulous planning paid off during the installation. The elevated concrete bases meant we didn’t need extra protective bollards, which maximized parking space and kept the area open and accessible. We’ve already installed and wired thirty-four charging stations, and they’re nearly ready for use.
Next Steps
Innovative thinking and meticulous planning were key to transforming the Rainbow Lakes parking lot into a state-of-the-art EV charging hub. While we’re only halfway through the project, we’ve already set a new standard for future developments. As we continue, we’re excited to see how this project will push the boundaries of EV infrastructure.
